Peace, be still.
Need peace on this Wednesday? Can you not see Friday on the horizon because of the storm? Is it one big whopping storm you’re in or are there many small storms? When the disciples were facing a storm at sea and afraid for their lives, Christ said, “Peace, be still.” Immediately the storm ceased and there was peace. The disciples wondered at this man whom the wind and seas obeyed.
The dove image with this blog really speaks to me. Years ago, I was in a storm of life and was seeking God through it all. As it was reaching its peak I was in the car with my oldest son, then nine years old. I was crying out to God with the inner man. We pulled to a stop light and a white dove flew down and landed on the wire running parallel to my car. It looked as if it was looking directly at me. “Peace, be still” came to me and I thought, God is that you telling me that you have this? Right then my son said, “Look Mama, it’s God.” and pointing at the dove. I had peace and thanked him, trusting he had it. God did have it. He did abundantly above all I could ask or think in that situation.
On this particular Wednesday, do you find yourself in a storm? May I remind you whose hands you’re in? He spoke to the storm and sea, “Peace be still” and they were still. The one who made the universe–has it. It didn’t surprise him. The enemy means it for evil but God means it for good.
We tend to wring our hands with all the “what ifs” of life. In the words of comedian Ken Davis, “You hear all the time, ‘pull yourself up by the bootstraps’. When you’re a child of God, you know what you get when you try that? Broken bootstraps.”
God knows the end from the beginning. He knew this was coming. Rely on him, he is sufficient. Look to him in all things. Allow him to do his work–as you surrender all to him. Isaiah 40:31, says “Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” After hearing a teaching on this verse, I looked more deeply at it. I looked at the original language and roots of the word “wait”. It means to exchange. He who exchanges with the Lord will renew their strength…
That’s covenant terminology. And precisely what we did when we entered into a relationship with our covenant keeping God. We exchanged ourselves—for–him. He took our sin and punishment as we became his child and inherited him and all he is.
In the storms of life, remember who you are in and who’s in you. Look to him. Be renewed and filled in the inner man. If you’re not in a storm fill up to overflowing with him. It’s good to grow in your relationship during the good seasons of life so you can stand in the stormy seasons.
Your take away this particular Wednesday is this: read Psalm chapter one. Apply it and live it. Remember seasons come and go. Storms and trials come and go. And Wednesdays come and go, but…Friday’s a’comin’. And most importantly, the Lord’s coming back too! And then all things will be made right. Until then, keep your eyes and heart fixated on him!
